What is Backlit Stone?
Where material and light come together.
How Backlit Stone Works.
Backlit stone can be natural stone or architectural stone. The stone is illuminated from behind using integrated LED lighting. The surface gently glows through the material, revealing depth, colour, and movement that isn’t always visible in traditional stone applications.
Backlighting shifts the stone from a simple surface to a dynamic feature. Light is used for enhancing the natural veining and variation within the material. This creates depth and a subtle glow that changes how the stone is experienced within a space.

What type of stone can be backlit?
Many types of stone, including onyx, agate, and select quartzites have natural translucent properties. When light is introduced behind the surface, it passes through the material rather than stopping at it. At Luminous Stone, this is achieved using fine, slim stone cuts instead of traditional thicker slabs. This allows the light to interact with the material in a much more intentional way. The result is a soft, diffused glow that enhances the stone’s natural veining and transforms it into something more than a surface, it becomes a feature.
Why use backlit stone?
Backlit stone is used to create architectural features that bring light and material together. Rather than applying lighting to a space, it becomes part of the structure itself. Whether used in a custom reception desk, a full-height feature wall, or a kitchen installation, backlit stone introduces warmth, depth, and a refined focal point.

benefits of using
backlit stone:
1.
Creates a strong visual focal point
3.
Adds depth and dimension to a space
2.
Enhances natural veining and variation
4.
Functions as both a surface and a lighting element.

Where can backlit stone be used?
Backlit stone can be integrated into a wide range of applications including:
- Fireplaces
- Feature walls
- Kitchen islands, countertops, and backsplashes
- Bar fronts and reception desks
- Wine displays
- Storefront and retail displays
- Bathroom vanities and shower walls
Each application is tailored based on the material, lighting approach, and overall design intent.
Our Approach
Backlit stone isn’t simply about adding light to stone, it’s about understanding how material, fabrication, and lighting work together as a complete system.
At Luminous Stone, we design, fabricate, and integrate each installation as a cohesive feature. The goal is always the same: to create something refined, seamless, and intentional within the space.

Can any stone be backlit?
Not all stone interacts with light in the same way. Translucency, structure, and composition all play a role in how effectively a material can be backlit. Understanding these differences is an important step in material selection.
