The Onion Desk
A Statement Lobby Feature in Natural Cipollino Marble
A Luxury Backlit Onyx Statement piece for an elevated entertainment experience.
Luminous Stone completed a custom concierge desk in a North York condo lobby. Designed to feel warm, inviting and quietly luxurious for residents and guests to feel welcomed into the space.
Being the first point of contact within a condo, the concierge desk should be more than just a functioning element. the lobby sets the tone for the entire experience, creating a luxurious focal point that feels welcoming, refined and seamlessy integrated.
Stone Selection: Cipollino Marble
The feature, nicknamed the “Onion Desk,” was created using Natural Onion Marble, also known as Cipollino Marble. The material brought a rich tones and movenebt to the lobby through natural veining, warm tones and a distinct layered appearance. Because the stone was available from one consistent block, Michael London Design’s design could maintain a cohesive visual flow across the different areas of the desk.
A unique aspect of this design was the way multiple stone thicknesses were used to develop the final design. The curved facade was completed using ultra-thin 1mm stone surface. This allowed the marble to wrap the entire front of the desk with a soft seamless appearance. Doing this helps to create a remarkably dramatic curve while also preserving the natural movement of the material used.
A 19mm marble surface was used to provide the durability needed for the desk to be a functional workspace. Using the ultra-thin curved facade and a thicker working surface creates a nice visual balance that impacts practicality positively. The result:
A sculptural lobby feature that feels refined, warm and fully integrated.

Workplace Solution; Luxurious aesthetic
Behind the client-facing side, the workspace was completed using complementary LAMINAM material in both 12mm and 6mm thicknesses. This area was not visible from the main lobby view, which allowed for a more practical material solution without compromising the high-end appearance of the desk.
Using LAMINAM in the working area helped reduce costs while still maintaining a durable, functional surface for everyday use. This approach allowed the visible side of the desk to remain the focal point, while the behind-the-scenes workspace was built with performance and practicality in mind.
Metal Detailing, defined.
We used a brushed gold metal band above the curved marble facade, which added a refined trim detail over the desk. This kind of detail helps defind the transition between the curving of the stone surface adn the upper portion of the desk. This gives the piece a more finished and intentional look, separating the desk from the surrounding space.
A brushed gold was chosen to compliment the natural tones within the marbling, this added a subtle layer of luxury without taking attention away from the stone itself, only elevating its elegance. This creates a clean visual accent that supports the overall lobby design, pulling the space together and elevating the desk as the statement feature.
Built On Site at Scale
A challenging aspect of this project was the scale. Because the size of the concierge desk was massive, the fabrication and millwork had to be installed onsite, with all stone installation completed in the space.
This project had to be carefuly coordinated with precision and problem-solving throughout the installation process. Working at this size means that detail focus is intentional. All the way from fitting the curved facade to aligning the countertop.
Although the execution was complex, the final result delivered exactly what the space needed: a warm, polished, and luxurious statement piece for the lobby.
