A Luxury Backlit Onyx Statement piece for an elevated entertainment experience.
This project takes place in Blair, Cambridge as a newly built coach house designed to be an entertainment space. A refined guest house concept inspired by the warmth of an exclusive retreat.
At the centre of the design, Luminous Stone was tasked with fabricating and installing one of our most ambitious residential backlit stone features our team has completed to date. One of the largest, backlit island installations in our vast portfolio.

Stone Selection: Royal White Onyx & White Onyx
For this project in particular, the designers chose a Royale White Onyx for the wine display and bar feature, paired with a White Onyx backlit island countertop.
The choice in stone was not only for the visual elegance, but because of the translucent, thin profile capability and the ability to illuminate across a full colour spectrum.
When unlit, both materials offer a clean, bright and sophisticated look that complements the surrounding finishes and decor. This allows for a dramatic transformation when lit, allowing the natural veining within the stone to come alive, showcasing the full depth and character of the material.
Because both stones respond well to RGBW full-colour backlighting, the client has the ability to shift the atmosphere depending on the occasion. From a soft ambiance in every day luxury to a rich celebratory colour for entertaining.
The Focal Point: A Statement Island of Scale
While the Coach house is an entire showpiece in itself, the island quickly becomes the feature that defines the entire space. Created using two married slabs, this installation allowed for us to create an uninterrupted expansion of illuminated stone.
The vast scale of the countertop demanded both technical precision and elevated craftsmanship. The island was designed to anchor the room visually, drawing attention from every angle and serving as not only a functional workspace but a sculpted centre piece for gatherings.
Its size alone makes it a statement. Its illumination makes it unforgettable.
Precision Craftsmanship in Semi-Precious Stone
When working with onyx at this scale, a high level of expertise in fabrication is required to go beyond standard stonework. Semi-previous stone is inherently more delicate, while creating the crisp corners and seamless edges is particularly challenging.
For this project our team was able to create clean, robust corners with exceptional consistency. This preserves the natural movement of the veining while ensuring it’s structurally integrated.
Designed for Celebration
One of the most memorable aspects of this project was a timeline consideration. The installation was completed under a tight turnaround to prepare the space for a special event, The event was in celebration of a birthday with the Coach House being the entertainment venue of choice featuring music by the legendary Burton Cummings.
Our team worked diligently to ensure the space was completed, ready and pristine to perform exactly as intended. This is where luxury design meets real life.

Light That Transforms Space
A custom integration of RGBW full-colour lighting with remote control functionality for the backlighting system allows for complete control over mood and atmosphere in the space. Whether it’s a softly illuminated experience or transformed for a vibrant vibe, the stone is crafted to adapt seamlessly.
What makes backlit stone so compelling is its versatility. It truly makes for a luxurious atmosphere. Both timeless and dynamic.
